5 Ways to Prepare to Go Hiking With Your Dog

Hiking can be a great way for you and your dog to get exercise!  Here’s how you can ensure your dog is prepared to go hiking:

Check the Weather Forecast

It’s important to check the weather forecast, so you’ll know what types of clothes to wear.  If it will be rainy, it may be a good idea to pack a raincoat for both you and your dog to stay dry.

Pack Plenty of Water

Your dog will most likely get thirsty from hiking, so it’s important to ensure your dog stays hydrated.  Pack approximately 1 ounce of water per pound of your dog’s body weight and a collapsible bowl.  Waggin Water is travel-friendly and can be great to pack for your dog to ensure they stay hydrated.

Pack Snacks for Your Dog

Pack plenty of snacks for both you and your dog.  Like humans, dogs tend to get hungrier with more exercise, so it’s important to pack snacks for your dog.  This way they’ll stay well-nourished during their hike.

Practice Obedience Training

It’s important to practice obedience training for 10 to 15 minutes for two to three times a day.  Commands such as “sit” and “come” can be vital as it will prevent your dog from wandering off, decreasing the risk that your dog will get injured or injure others.

Consider bringing a leash and harness for safety

Consider bringing a leash and harness for your dog.  This way you’ll be able to ensure your dog stays safe by pulling your dog near you, especially if you see a plant that might be poisonous or if another animal tries to attack your dog.

By doing these things, you can make sure you and your fury companion are prepared and stay safe.  Have fun hiking!
