How Dogs Can Benefit Your Mental Health

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month.  In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, here are some ways your furry companion can benefit your mental health:

Dogs Can Help You Stay Active

Dogs can help you get more exercise when you take them for runs, walks, and hikes.  Exercise can increase endorphins, which are brain chemicals that can improve your mood, sleep and overall wellbeing.  Also, when you’re outside in the sun you get more Vitamin D, which helps with muscle movement, nerve connections to the brain, and immune system functioning.

Dogs Provide Companionship

Dogs can provide companionship, which decreases loneliness.  Whether the owner goes on adventures with their dogs or stays home cuddling with them, they can feel less lonely and comforted.

Dogs Can Reduce Anxiety

Dogs can reduce anxiety by contributing to mindfulness. They can help with mindfulness because the owner can focus on petting their dog or on the dog’s breath.  Dogs can also give people a sense of security.

Dogs Can Help with Routine

The owner is more likely to follow a routine when they’re caring for their dog.  Routine can contribute to people’s overall wellbeing by increasing their productivity, improving their time management, and giving them a sense of accomplishment.

By recognizing and nurturing the bond we share with our canine companions, we can cultivate a sense of joy, connection, and resilience.  Spend time with your furry friend, embracing the therapeutic benefits of their companionship, and prioritize your mental well-being.
